Media Reference Guide

Project Sleep’s Sleep Disorders: A Toolkit for Journalists is a new style guide to help media professionals accurately cover sleep health and sleep disorders in the news. Though the toolkit is customized for the American audience, the sleep dynamics remain the same across the board.

In Kenya and Africa, the prevalence of sleep disorders remains largely unknown due to limited research and awareness. Challenges such as scarce specialized sleep clinics, lack of trained sleep doctors, and cultural stigma surrounding sleep disorders make it difficult to identify and address these conditions effectively.

The toolkit serves as a valuable resource for media professionals to bridge this gap and raise awareness. The toolkit includes:

  • Statistics and fact sheets
  • Language and image suggestions
  • Example stories
  • Actionable next steps & key talking points

How Journalists Can Cover Sleep Health in Africa

General sleep health tips are helpful, but it’s crucial to inform audiences that if they prioritize sleep yet struggle with insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness, they may have a sleep disorder. Encouraging consultation with sleep specialists or healthcare providers is key.

Responsible Reporting Should Address Sleep Disorders

In Africa, many individuals with undiagnosed sleep disorders face these conditions in isolation, often misjudging their struggles as laziness or personal failings. Simply offering sleep tips without discussing sleep disorders can leave them feeling hopeless and without a clear path to diagnosis or care. Responsible journalism should highlight both sleep health and the importance of addressing sleep disorders to provide actionable guidance.
